MORE RECENT PICS & STORIES

Alright, it’s about time to show you some of my most recent designs!
First up, we have “BtL” – my own “logo” for Back to Life Chiropractic:

And the hand print idea that was funded a while back:
Something like this...

I asked my student “Maiden” what he would think if I made the hand into a “rock out” sign. He makes the hand sign for “love” when he’s rocking out, so I figured that would be a good tribute to him. He said it would be awesome, so I went for it:

The next person to donate is another runner from AREC. He runs barefoot. So even though he didn’t have an idea for a design, I just had to pay tribute to him this way:

The next time I tried to re-shave the foot, I almost destroyed the toes, but was able to save them by separating them from the foot:

Someone suggested to me on my birthday that I do a special design. I didn’t want to get rid of the rock out hand, so I made the foot into 2 birthday candles, and shaved an 8 into the hand. Any guesses on how old I turned this birthday?
March 22
"Maiden" drew me a birthday cake - note the 2 candles!
One of our music instructors pointed out that the letters are actually notes: two eight notes, a quarter note, and a quarter rest!
I had let the design grow out a bit more than usual this time – look at all the hair I shaved off!
March 25
Well, after having the same designs on my head for a while, I decided to start over with a blank slate:

What ideas will be next?
This canvas is yours!

And now, story time…
So I’ve heard that many people have been praying for me. They think I have cancer. Thank you for your prayers, but please redirect them to:
·      Kids with cancer. I donated my hair to Locks of Love. Please pray for healing for these kids, and also that receiving wigs from Locks of Love will make them feel more “normal” and accepted.
·      My fundraising. It is my desire that my story will open the world’s eyes to people with disabilities (my students), what they’re capable of and how wonderful they are, and that it will inspire others to give. I don’t like asking for money. I love sharing my story.

I was at Target the other day, and I overheard an employee say “she’s got a hand on her head!” So I turned around, and she motioned for me to come over, saying she wanted to take a closer look. She said that at first she thought I had chemo and was just growing my hair back, but when she saw the hand shaved onto my head, she thought “never mind!”
It’s in situations like this where I overcome my shy nature and it seems like I can talk to anyone. I think being bald has really caused me to open up. I can’t care what others think, because they’re probably either thinking I’m sick, or I’m brave. Most people seem to have a positive reaction to the designs on my bald head. I wonder what it will be like when I start to grow my hair out…

As I walked up to the register at a Starbucks by work, the employee at the register said to me, “that’s an interesting hair style!” I explained that it was a fundraiser, and told him about the designs, which he then pointed to and said, “hey, you might as well go with it!” He didn’t really seem too interested in hearing any more, but I appreciated that he was straightforward in commenting on my hair style!

As I was leaving another Starbucks by my house a couple months ago, there was a man getting onto his motorcycle just outside. He looked like your typical “tough guy,” but his leather jacket had a bright yellow design that said “Soldiers for Jesus.”
Seeing this guy just reminded me that we shouldn’t judge people for the way they look. I’m not just talking about me and my crazy looking shaved head. It would be easy judge my students by the way they look, and assume that they can’t do something, instead of just trying it. I’m always amazed at how much they can do, if I simply ask. Who knows what they’ll be able to do with a computer – I can’t wait to find out!

VISIT TO THE APPLE STORE

On February 16th, I finally went to the Apple store to talk to someone about what I really need for my MacBook. Been wanting to do that for a while! So here’s what I learned:

·      The only advantage of the 15” is that it will give me 2” more visually for GarageBand. Looking at both computers at the Apple store, it seems like this 2” will be beneficial for this purpose.
·      It would be good to get a 7200 rpm drive because it accesses info faster, but I don’t need any more than a 4G hard drive.
·      There are free music lessons in GarageBand that some of my students may benefit from.
·      I should look into getting a USB keyboard. Apparently GarageBand can do notation too, so my students would be able to compose a melody by improvising on the keyboard and having it instantly translate it to music notation.
·      A nice accessible tool would be the Bamboo Pen & Touch. It’s basically a large track pad, which students could use more easily.
·      The iPad would also be an awesome tool! There is a communication app for it that would be great for a lot of my students. I have thought about getting an iPad, i.e. instead of a computer. Problem is, it doesn’t have GarageBand. But there are a lot more awesome apps that would be great to use with my students!
·      There is a program called djay (for MacBook or iPad) that would be useful for having our students DJ for our biannual performances.
·      Apple does not make adaptive software programs that my students can use, i.e. to compose a song by using a joy stick. Therefore I should research programs compatible with the MacBook! Anybody know of any?
·      Please leave a comment if you have any more suggestions!

RECENT PICS & STORIES

There’s so much to talk about…where to start?
Let me pick up from where I left off. The hair patterns continue!
After our YWAM trip to Mexico, the next request I had was to put “two music notes” on my head. I wanted to leave the AREC logo, so this was my thought:
First I re-did the YWAM logo:
February 1
Here’s the music note that’s part of the “E” of “AREC” – I decided to go with the lower part of the “E”:
To make everything the same length, I ended up buzzing the AREC:
The music notes were still not clear enough, so a few days later, I shaved off the AREC completely and focused on the notes:
February 6
Whew, this proved to be a difficult design! As it turned out, even my musician friends had a hard time telling that these were music notes. Hmm, what’s the point if no one can tell what it is? Let’s start over with a blank slate:
February 10
This time, since it was almost Valentine’s day, I designed the music notes a bit differently:
And, just to show further support for Apple, let’s put their logo on the other side!
These pictures, by the way, are the first I took with my new iPhone. Best phone I’ve ever had – I’m loving it!
Here’s the end result of these designs:
And the music notes, a few days later:
February 15
The next design (also funded by the same AREC runner) will be “B t L” in script, in support of Back to Life Chiropractic:
The chiropractor is another AREC runner. She’s great!

After that, the next funded idea is a hand print. Looks like someone has already used this idea:
So let me ask, have you put your handprint on the bald head of this project yet? I’m not sure what I mean by that, but it sounded like a deep thought, so I’ll leave it up for interpretation. :)

It’s been fun seeing people’s reactions to my lack of hair. Adults usually either think it’s cool, or ask “are you ok?” When they try not to stare, it can be awkward. Not for me, because I don’t mind at all, but sometimes it seems like they’re trying not to ask questions with their eyes. Or trying not to get caught staring, maybe?
Kids, on the other hand, just stare, no reservations, even if they get caught and we make eye contact. I love the innocence and honesty of this. A few weeks ago, I was going to get my laundry (we have shared laundry facilities at our condo) when I saw a man with his two small daughters passing by. The youngest daughter looked down the walkway at me as she walked by. Just before I was out of her sight, she leaned back and continued watching me.

Another cute kid story: At church the other day, I was playing my djembe. A friend I’ve started running with recently was sitting in the front row with her 3-year-old daughter, who was staring at me. My friend wasn’t sure if it was because of my bald head, or the drum (this little girl loves drums), until she said, “That Liz, she's an instrument girl, and she's a running girl...but she's not a hair girl.”
Couldn’t have said it better myself!

MORE “RENTER” PICS

Thanks to a runner from AREC (A Running Experience Club), I’ve had some interesting things to shave onto my head lately. Since I run at AREC every week, I’ve kept this one:
January 14
I only had time to re-shave the pattern (we were getting ready to move the next day), so I left the hair on the rest of my head. Once we were “settled in” to our new place, I had time to finish it:
January 18

The newest addition that was rented was space on the left side of my head:
January 18
Smile, it’s ok for you to laugh at my bald head! One of my students takes this to heart – she laughs at me every time she sees me. Forget about eye contact, her eyes always go straight to the top of my head, as she giggles uncontrollably! Once in class, I tried to ask her a question, and she was laughing so hard that she couldn’t even attempt to answer me!

The next idea for space was to keep the AREC logo and add a swirly pattern (“be creative”) on the rest of my head. Since we had just gotten back from Mexico on a trip with YWAM to build a home, my idea was to use the YWAM logo:
and add additional swirls around it. I figured I better draw this one out first. Here’s the original sketch:
Prepping the area:
January 24
Probably about an hour later…voila!
The AREC logo is still there, along with an extra swirl:

Note the hat-opening-shaped sunburn. Apparently I didn’t hit that particular spot with sunscreen, oops! It was a beautiful sunny weekend, in sharp contrast to the two years prior when we built homes in the rain. It’s a lot easier to paint when the paint actually dries…but with my lack of hair, I knew I needed a full hat that offers better sun protection than a visor – I just didn’t remember the open spot in the back!

It’s been really fun continuing this fundraiser and implementing ideas for what to shave onto my head. And as of the beginning of this week, I’m up to a grand total of $1,198 – just $2 shy of a MacBook Pro 13”! At this point, I think it’s time to bring my story to Apple and see if we can get them involved. If I haven’t mentioned this, the company I work for (ASD) has four facilities. I’m not the only music therapist who could use a MacBook at my job…all I can do is ask, and see what happens!

THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone who’s contributed. I’m amazed by everyone’s generosity and glad that so many people have connected with my story! In the end, it really is all about the students (although the crazy hair patterns have been fun!), and I can’t wait to get the computer and explore it with them!
