RECENT PICS & STORIES

There’s so much to talk about…where to start?
Let me pick up from where I left off. The hair patterns continue!
After our YWAM trip to Mexico, the next request I had was to put “two music notes” on my head. I wanted to leave the AREC logo, so this was my thought:
First I re-did the YWAM logo:
February 1
Here’s the music note that’s part of the “E” of “AREC” – I decided to go with the lower part of the “E”:
To make everything the same length, I ended up buzzing the AREC:
The music notes were still not clear enough, so a few days later, I shaved off the AREC completely and focused on the notes:

Whew, this proved to be a difficult design! As it turned out, even my musician friends had a hard time telling that these were music notes. Hmm, what’s the point if no one can tell what it is? Let’s start over with a blank slate:
February 10
This time, since it was almost Valentine’s day, I designed the music notes a bit differently:
And, just to show further support for Apple, let’s put their logo on the other side!
These pictures, by the way, are the first I took with my new iPhone. Best phone I’ve ever had – I’m loving it!
Here’s the end result of these designs:
And the music notes, a few days later:

The next design (also funded by the same AREC runner) will be “B t L” in script, in support of Back to Life Chiropractic:
The chiropractor is another AREC runner. She’s great!

After that, the next funded idea is a hand print. Looks like someone has already used this idea:
So let me ask, have you put your handprint on the bald head of this project yet? I’m not sure what I mean by that, but it sounded like a deep thought, so I’ll leave it up for interpretation. :)

It’s been fun seeing people’s reactions to my lack of hair. Adults usually either think it’s cool, or ask “are you ok?” When they try not to stare, it can be awkward. Not for me, because I don’t mind at all, but sometimes it seems like they’re trying not to ask questions with their eyes. Or trying not to get caught staring, maybe?
Kids, on the other hand, just stare, no reservations, even if they get caught and we make eye contact. I love the innocence and honesty of this. A few weeks ago, I was going to get my laundry (we have shared laundry facilities at our condo) when I saw a man with his two small daughters passing by. The youngest daughter looked down the walkway at me as she walked by. Just before I was out of her sight, she leaned back and continued watching me.

Another cute kid story: At church the other day, I was playing my djembe. A friend I’ve started running with recently was sitting in the front row with her 3-year-old daughter, who was staring at me. My friend wasn’t sure if it was because of my bald head, or the drum (this little girl loves drums), until she said, “That Liz, she's an instrument girl, and she's a running girl...but she's not a hair girl.”
Couldn’t have said it better myself!

MORE “RENTER” PICS

Thanks to a runner from AREC (A Running Experience Club), I’ve had some interesting things to shave onto my head lately. Since I run at AREC every week, I’ve kept this one:
January 14
I only had time to re-shave the pattern (we were getting ready to move the next day), so I left the hair on the rest of my head. Once we were “settled in” to our new place, I had time to finish it:
January 18

The newest addition that was rented was space on the left side of my head:
January 18
Smile, it’s ok for you to laugh at my bald head! One of my students takes this to heart – she laughs at me every time she sees me. Forget about eye contact, her eyes always go straight to the top of my head, as she giggles uncontrollably! Once in class, I tried to ask her a question, and she was laughing so hard that she couldn’t even attempt to answer me!

The next idea for space was to keep the AREC logo and add a swirly pattern (“be creative”) on the rest of my head. Since we had just gotten back from Mexico on a trip with YWAM to build a home, my idea was to use the YWAM logo:
and add additional swirls around it. I figured I better draw this one out first. Here’s the original sketch:
Prepping the area:

Probably about an hour later…voila!
The AREC logo is still there, along with an extra swirl:

Note the hat-opening-shaped sunburn. Apparently I didn’t hit that particular spot with sunscreen, oops! It was a beautiful sunny weekend, in sharp contrast to the two years prior when we built homes in the rain. It’s a lot easier to paint when the paint actually dries…but with my lack of hair, I knew I needed a full hat that offers better sun protection than a visor – I just didn’t remember the open spot in the back!

It’s been really fun continuing this fundraiser and implementing ideas for what to shave onto my head. And as of the beginning of this week, I’m up to a grand total of $1,198 – just $2 shy of a MacBook Pro 13”! At this point, I think it’s time to bring my story to Apple and see if we can get them involved. If I haven’t mentioned this, the company I work for (ASD) has four facilities. I’m not the only music therapist who could use a MacBook at my job…all I can do is ask, and see what happens!

THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone who’s contributed. I’m amazed by everyone’s generosity and glad that so many people have connected with my story! In the end, it really is all about the students (although the crazy hair patterns have been fun!), and I can’t wait to get the computer and explore it with them!
